Unable to combine Face in Picture with Face Paint, Makeup, or other effects.

I even looked up the user's snap lenses and saw that she was able to do it.
Maybe I'm just doing it all wrong. I'd love to hear where my mistakes are.
(Here's a more detailed description of what I want to do. I want to animate a portrait so it looks like I'm talking through it. I want the portrait to remain static, and have "Face Paint" of the portrait be applied to my static face. However, the face paint always mapped to my 'real' face which isn't visible. i.e. It will move and shift around. So essentially, I'll have my normal AF face on the neck of the portrait, and then a freaky George Washington or Mona Lisa face without a mouth or eyes flying around as I move. How do I fix this?)
