Filming with lenses
Hi Everyone,
This one is more for the Snapchat Team who made the promotional video we see, with all the amazing dancers and selected face lenses, the final take being a person who turns into an elephant..
So.... my question is about the technical setup behind the filming.
We can import preview videos into Lens Studio up to a certain file size, which is related to the resolution, right...? So we can get a crisp clean projection using that method, but the export quality will have its limit, compared to 4K quality for example.
So how did the team get high-res video with the lenses I wonder. I guess my question is also to anyone who has tried to film lenses and if they had bouht any particular software that links a video camera to your webcam, and recognizes it as your webcam for instance, or anyone who has experience here.
Recently I had to import a hi-res video into separate layers to project individually in Lens Studio. You can imagine how time consuming it was doing 150 odd images.. and that was for a short video.
I'd love any descriptions of experiments, any wisdom in this area, would be most appreciated.
Of course filming directly from the phone or ipad is possible, obviously, but then we are constrained by the dimensions of the device. since snaps are done in portrait mode only...
Okay, so im assuming noone has any experience capturing 4K quality with a Snapchat lens except the Snapchat Team, so how do I go about asking them directly? is this the only way to post in the forum?
If anyone has asked a question directly to the SnapTeam another way pleae let me know. i will try logging a bug report to get this question answered because it's a simple factual question.
Hey ScreenWear.com.au
You can try emailing them (lensstudio-support@snapchat.com)
Unfortunetly i couldnt find an answer for your question :/
Gee I appreciate that, I had no idea of such an email in existence! I have now emailed them and if they ever respond with details, I'm happy to share, as it should encourage people to make professional level films with lenses. At the moment, I see lenses as quite.... let's just say it's still quite new and novel, but there's nothing to say that they couldn't be taken more seriously/artistically as a creative medium, so for that, it's good to know what equipment they used, so better quality films can be made.
Cheers!
I totally agree :D
Hey All,
So I found on Instagram the Lens Studio promo film and they list all the creators and producers so I was able to ask people directly through that channel, and it appears they shot the footage of the dancers first using cinema cameras, and then mapped the lenses on. So my understanding is that they brought footage into the preview video section of Lens Studio. Because if you map onto video directly, sometimes you get grainy lines from the screen surface.
Interesting! Thanks for letting me know 😊
