Up-Skill lens creation

  • Hey Tanya!

It looks like you have most aspects of lens creation covered on the graphic design aspect. One thing you might want to look into is Substance Painter, which gives you a way to create some great textures , normal maps, and specular maps to your 3D objects. This really increases the quality! If you want to learn more about sculpting in 3D, ZBrush is a great tool for this.

Aside from those programs, I’d suggest dipping your toes into the programming side of Lens Studio! There’s always so much you can learn no matter how much you know already. It gives you a lot more control over your lenses and opens up a huge world of possibilities!

You should also check out the material editor and learn about shaders. This is a great tool they recently unveiled that allows us to create some amazing special effects! I’ve found looking up tutorials on YouTube for Unity Shader graphs helps learn the basic concept because it is very similar to Lens Studios shaders!

    Hope that helps!

  • Hey Ben

Thank you for the tips, I'll def have a look at Substance Painter, Z Brush and check out the material editor and Unity Shader tutorials. My goal for the year is to get into the coding side and try at least one portal lens.

One problem that I found with the 3D objects and Lens Studio is the size limit. How do you go about creating a portal lens or world lens with the 4MB size limit? I'm so scared that I go through the process of creating a room only to find that I can't import it into Lens Studio (I'm very new with Blender). Would you perhaps know anything about that?

    Appreciate the help :)

  • Zbrush, Substance and C4D user here.

Using the material editor or having PBR will make your life easier when trying to keep the size low.

Also retopology in Zbrush and Volume builder in C4D help a lot for shaping complex models. Normal maps can help you get that extra detail without increasing your file size. Look at everything that has to do with asset creation for videogames.
