OBS Virtual Cam not selectable

  • Hi Alan,

Snap Camera currently does not support DirectShow-based virtual cameras.

What kind of experience are you looking for?

    Cheers,

    Karolina

  • I Karolina, I hope you don't mind me bumping this old thread.

I don't have a USB webcam so I've been using OBS VirtualCam to relay an IP Camera stream from my phone, this works great in most software, discord, google meet, etc. but unfortunately not so much with Snap Camera.

Given that Snap Camera doesn't currently work DirectShow virtual cameras, my question is the same as Alan's, is this something in the plans for the future? Or, are there any alternative methods to get this working? Or perhaps support for streaming from an IP Camera directly ( :) )?

I have done a bit of research on "Snap Camera + IP Camera" but I'm likely missing some tool that goes in between (like OBS VirtualCam) that is supported by Snap Camera. It would be valuable to get some advice from someone who knows about this kind of thing.

  • I am also looking to use OBS Virtual-cam as a virtual webcam with Snap Camera.

I want to be able to output an OBS scene to snapcamera, apply a green screen filter, and then re-input it into OBS so I can superimpose copies of myself in a scene both with and without the applied filter.

  • Bumping from Maxwell's reply above, I am looking to do the exact same thing, for those who would like to use higher-end cameras with the softwares, this would be an immense feat especially with CamLink 4K's out of stock literally everywhere.

  • Also wondering if this will be supported. Would be a nice way to add some filters to the stream. As Nikoheart said, hardware is difficult to find at the moment. Being able to use virtualcam would be so awesome.

  • +1 on this, been looking for a way.

  • Would love this functionality for snap camera

  • I agree virtual-cams should be supported for snap camera

  • Ditto!  I'm using OBS to capture my DSLR feed which I'd then like to send to Snap Camera, or back and forth like others are saying.

  • I would also like this feature! But for now, I found a workaround. It can take up a lot of system resources though.

    1. Get SplitCam: https://splitcam.com/ (Snap Camera is able to use the SplitCam virtual camera)
    2. Either do your effects in SplitCam or add the obs virtual camera to SplitCam
    3. Change the camera in Snap Camera to SplitCam Video Driver

For me, I do my effects in obs so the video gets laggy, so I would still like to be able to directly choose the obs virtual camera in Snap Camera.

  • Bumping this thread.

I use a Cinema Camera (ZCAM E2 F6) which my computer receives the data via a streaming api, and the Manufacturer supplied application creates a Virtual Camera that other applications can see, however it is missing from Snap Camera. This camera cannot be used as a 'Webcam' device when connecting to windows. This workflow will be common among professionals looking to bring their excelent quality gear to streaming.

Adding another serivce, such as splitcam, seems unncessary to acquire data. I hope in the future there will be an option to consume 'virtual' cameras, as i cannot use my gear setup + snap cam.

In addition to my zcam woes, this solution will not work for the many people using the Canon EOS utility, canons answer to using a high-end-camera for work / teleconferencing.

  • What kind of experience are you looking for?

    Canon EOS utility

that's the experience I'm looking for, I installed OBS hoping Snap Cam would recognize it :(
Lets see if SplitCam does the Job ^^

@Timothy Thx for recommending SplitCam, it works :)

  • +1!!
Snapcam MUST be able to recognize all types of camera sources... this would enable full body green screen functionality... superimposed on a PowerPoint presentation/deck.  Note: I am a power business user.

  • Bumping this Thread again in 2022, Letting SnapCam know we still would love support for OBS VirtualCam! We want to use our better quality DSLR's instead of bad quality webcams!!!

  • I'd also love to use Snap Camera with OBS VirtualCam

  • Bumping this - would be awesome to have Canon EOS and/or OBS as an option for webcam source.

  • I would also love to have this feature. I want to pass in Nvidia Broadcast as the source and this feature would be immensely helpful!

Edit: Thank you @timothy! Splitcam works for me for now.

  • Hi,

since I am in HomeOffice since two years I built some "stack" of camera software for online meetings.

    I use:

    - Logitech WebCam C930

    - NVIDIA Broadcast (Input: Logitech WebCam): Background replacement by looping video

    - OBS (Input: NVIDIA Broadcast): Overlay with company logo and name (Output: NDI Overlay on Scene)

    - NDI Virtual Camera (Input: NDI Overlay in OBS) (Output: NDI Virtual Camera)

    - Snap Camera (Input: NDI Virtual Camera): Filtering/Cosmetics (Output: Snap Camera)

    - Teams (Input: Snap Camera): Fine looking in meetings :P

The stack was not hard to build and is running reliable. But it needs some hardware ressources to run.

  • To send your scenes out to the rest of your system as a webcam you simply need to click the Start Virtual Camera button in the Controls dock on the main screen of OBS Studio. Then, whichever app you want to use a webcam with, instead of selecting your hardware webcam, choose the OBS Virtual Camera option instead.

Yes that's how it's suppose to work.
This entire thread is dedicated to the fact that it's not working!
I just checked again just in case they fixed it.
    OBS 27.2.3
    Snap Camera 1.18.0
    Windows 11

  • Alex Mehar, how about you go try this yourself and get back to us? Your advice is simply not true. SnapCam will not recognize a virtual camera.  I just tried what you suggested and it simply doesn't work.

  • Has anyone found a good work around?

and yes Alex Mehar and aleximmi and jam jak This is exactly what this issue is. What you are telling people to do simply does not work. OBS Virtual Camera does not show up as an option.

@... answered with "Snap Camera currently does not support DirectShow-based virtual cameras." which answers that but it was in 2019 so I wanted to know if there are pans to get this working or if anyone has found a fix.
