Snap Camera on Linux

  • There are similar (in concept) apps under Linux, they all seem to require root privileges to install as they create new video4linux devices (or depend on other out-of-tree kernel modules).

There are also user-mode approaches. Using gstreamer, is one way:

As the owner of 6 shares of SNAP, I demand Linux support! :-D

  • +1 definitely useful. As someone else said, this could be open source so the community could help maintain it. You could make the installation of v4lloopback (or whatever driver is used) separate from the program, and then the program would just pipe to the loopback device.

  • +1 for Linux. Everyday your company leverages the free opensource Linux platform to process messages and probably the very video we are talking about. I'm going to guess you are not running windows servers. This saves you millions and millions every year in licensing fees. Not to mention its secure and way easier to automate and scale. There are 1000s of Linux contributors that make this happen for you. Time to give back. Apple has enough revenue maybe time to get some Devs that can handle running Linux on their laptops it's really shouldn't be that hard. If only a few of the FAANG type companies did this this post wouldn't exist.

  • Hi,

I'm a cat. I'd really really like to go to my court hearings with a Lawyer Snap overlay so that they can't tell I'm a cat. Being the cool cat that I am, I use GNU/Linux. OBS studio and v4l2 all allow me to do funky thinks with my camera feeds for Zoom, Teams, Skype, etc. but I have yet to find a tool which will allow me to wrap myself in a horse hair wig and full ceremonial dress.

    Please please please help me.

    Miaow
